In working with natural objects, I am reminded of how the Earth provides us with such
great beauty. The subjects and styles I choose are mixed-media gourd sculptures because I enjoy using elements
from nature and juxtaposing them in interesting relationships with each other.
I am most inspired by form, and the integration of different materials to enhance it. I choose my materials
because they each speak to me as a unique object with individual appeal, however I can imagine the synergistic
work of art which results when using them in combination with each other. I begin a piece by choosing the elements
which complement the shape of the gourd, then apply the appropriate color to enhance that design. I know a piece
is finished when the mixed-media applications bring out the natural beauty of the form without overpowering it.
When a new work is complete, I am filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
I think viewers are most interested in my abilities to transcend natural materials to become cohesive design elements.
When people see my work, I would like them to feel a sense of connection with their roots. It is my hope that the
viewer is able to receive as much joy when observing my work as I feel when creating it. |
